Garage Door Styles

While there are many garage door styles out there, only some of them will work well with a traditional home. Below, you will find some of the best options available.

Since there are so many garage door styles to choose from, it can be overwhelming to walk into a manufacturer’s workshop or to flip through a thick catalogue. In fact, when many homeowners first begin to look for their perfect pair of doors, they are often met with frustration, confusion, and bewilderment. Sometimes, you can rely upon a salesperson to lead you through this process, though it is always a wise idea to have your own knowledge regarding this home addition.

For the most part, single width bay doors are best for a country home, barn, workshop, or carriage house. Since these doors are usually 9’-0” wide, they tend to be larger than those that would be needed for a suburban home. If you are seeking fixtures for your suburban home, look for ones that are at least 7’ high. However, you must also consider the size of your existing car (if you wish to park it inside of your garage).

Many cars today tend to be taller than they used to be, which is why any large SUV or pickup truck will require an 8’ door. If you are going to be placing boats, lawn equipment, or RVs inside of your basement, you will need to gain the actual dimension of the vehicles before you buy any type of door. Also, you must leave a space for the top of the door and the underside of the ceiling (you have to install door tracks and electric openers). As you can see, going through various garage door styles is only half of the battle.

Once you get those measurements down, you can then begin to figure out what kind of design you want your home to reflect. If you home is largely modern, you may find that installing a modern door is just what you need. If you home happens to be classic, there are many rustic designs out there. No matter what, make sure you find something that really reflects your overall personality – after all, this is one of the first things that people see when they come to your house.

Don’t let all of those garage door styles overwhelm you. Instead, take your time, find out what you really like, and then decide upon the right design, size, and material for your home.
