What To Look For In Garage Doors

Whether you are building a new home or doing an upgrade, a new garage door is often a necessity. So, you are probably wondering what to look for in garage doors? Glad you asked!

Not all garage doors are created equal. As with any element of a home, there is a measure of quality and style. When it comes to style, you are on your own as each home has distinctive needs. The same goes for the mechanism of the garage door. Some roll up vertically and “bend” to a horizontal position when they reach the top part of the roof. The more traditional garage door just tilts on a pivot as you pull or push down on the door like a teeter tot. Either works fine, so the “best” choice is simply a matter of taste.

Security

So, what do you look for? As odd as it sounds, more and more thieves are breaking into homes through garage doors. Some doors are very thin. Thin doesn’t necessarily mean weak, but it often does. With this in mind, it is easy for a thief to just kick a hole in the door and wiggle in. It is difficult for people to see the hole at night, so it is not the eyesore you might think. Buying a sturdy door that is going to resist break in efforts is a wise move.

Dents

A step down from break in worries is the dent issue. Garage doors are going to take a beating. They’ll be hit by balls, Frisbees, skateboards, the occasional car and…well, everything. A beautiful expensive door is going to look like Mike Tyson used it as a punching bag if it isn’t dent resistant. In short, look for durability through the material used on the exterior.

Insulation

Many older garages get burning hot in the summer and icy cold in the winter. This inevitably seeps in through the walls shared with the interior of the home and raises your utility bills. It can also raise them by requiring your water heater to fire up over and over to maintain hot water in the home. You can manually insulate your garage door or just buy it with insulation already embedded. Guess which is easier? Look for the “R” value of the door. The higher the R number, the more insulation it provides.

There are many other issues that go into selecting your garage door, but most have to do with style and materials used. If you keep an eye out for these three, you’ll be covered on the big issues.
