Opening A Broken Garage Door

A garage door undergoes a lot of torque when moving. Even the best ones eventually break. Opening a broken garage door can be tricky, but there are some common strategies.

The first step to opening a broken garage door is, ironically, not about opening it at all. Garage doors come in many different styles and designs. This means the first step is figuring out where the problem is with the broken door. Once you nail it down, you can then use a particular technique when opening the garage door.

Broken Spring

The most common problem with broken garage doors is found in the springs. The vast majority of doors have two sets of springs one the far left and right of the door. Over time, these springs will fail. When this happens, the tension needed to keep that side of the door is lost. As a result, that side of the door will hang down when the door is lifted or put down. It creates tremendous stress on the rest of the door, the opener and the other spring.

To deal with the problem, you need to provide support for the door on that corner. You can use ladders or anything to do that when the door is open. When the door is going to be opened or closed, just stand there and provide support with your hands. Get the problem fixed as soon as possible.

Broken Door

Older doors will start to decay rapidly. If the door loses its structural integrity, it should be opened and closed manually. Even the smoothest garage door opener has a jerky motion and pulls the door violently. By grabbing the door at the bottom, you can slowly push it into position. A door in this much trouble needs to be replaced quickly. It should never be left in the upright, horizontal position because it may fail and fall on your car or a person.

Broken Opener

You click the button and nothing happens! Arrrgggg. Maybe you hear the motor running. Maybe it is just dead silent. What are you going to do? Well, you probably need a new opener or at least a professional repair man to look at it. Until then, you need to manually open and close the door. You can do this by pulling down the rope with the red handle on it half way down the track. This will disengage the garage door opener. You can then just manually open and close the door as needed. Make sure to lock it when leaving the home so a burglary doesn’t occur!

Opening a broken garage door is not particularly difficult. Your bigger problem is getting it fixed.
