How A Garage Door Should Operate Without An Opener

The garage door opener is an invention people love every morning they run off late to work or come home to in the rain. Buy how should a garage door opener operate without an opener?

The garage door has been with us much longer than electricity. We take it for granted that a flick of a button in our car opens and closes a rather heavy and unwieldy rectangle of material. If garage door openers disappeared, most of us would be baffled! So, how does one operate a garage door without an opener? I’m glad you asked.

The simple answer is with brute force. Come on, a bit of exercise never hurt anyone. To operate your garage door without an opener, you just need yourself and a padlock. The door is opened and closed from the middle position. By this, I mean you stand either inside or outside the door half way between the left and right edges. The exterior of the door should have a handle to help with the manipulation.

Opening and closing the door is accomplished by using force. To open, the door is pushed or pulled away from the garage. The natural arch of the brackets will swing the door into a horizontal, upright position. The opposite motion is used to close the door. Yes, it is that simple.

What about the lock? A garage door opener acts as a natural lock. When engaged, the opener will not allow the door to move unless it receives a radio wave telling it to do so. It is similar to trying to move a car while it is in gear and the engine is off. You aren’t going very far!

Without an opener, anyone can open and close the garage door at their whim. This makes burglary and other crimes a real possibility. This is where the lock comes in. The door should have a lock hinge on one end. You simply clamp the lock on and secure the door. Of course, you need to take it off when you want to open or close the door, but there you are.

Operating a garage door without an opener is very simple. It just takes a bit of force provided by little old you!
