Garage Door Opening By Itself

Is your garage door opening by itself? Your opener is possessed! Just kidding. There are a couple of potential causes and we cover them in this article.

Nothing beats relaxing in your own home. It is a peaceful day. Birds are singing. Angelina Jolie is running around in the yard…oh, sorry. Regardless, it is a peaceful day and then suddenly the room starts shaking. Is it an earthquake? Is this the end!? Nope, your garage door is possessed and the poltergeist is expressing itself by opening and closing.

Okay, I admit you probably don’t have a haunted garage door opener. The real problem, however, can be found in the openers kept in the cars. The problem has to do with the buttons being pushed. First, make sure nothing is sitting on them and compressing them. This occurs all the time if you leave the opener in the center dash or where you collect change and so on. Yes, it could be as simple as this.

Assuming it is not, look at the actual opener. Is it dirty and grungy? It doesn’t take much for the button to register a push. This means a button that is even slightly stuck can trigger the garage door. Try using rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab to clean around the edges.

Batteries

The average garage door opener is not exactly state of the art military grade equipment. The little opener in your car is pretty much the low run of technology these days. That means it falls apart easily. If your garage door starts opening by itself, try to remember if you changed the batteries recently. If you did, then take try nudging the battery connectors after taking the battery out. Why? They can move a bit and press against the pad in such a way that the garage door trigger is set off.

Other Openers

We’ve all heard the stories of criminals cruising up and down streets trying to use openers to open garage doors. It happens, but rarely works. That doesn’t mean you don’t have a problem with a third adapter. Huh? Well, it could be yours. Garage door openers come with multiple openers. If you have an extra one – find it! It might be the trigger. It sounds far fetched, but it often isn’t. Something could fall on it in a drawer and set your garage door off.

Thy Garage Door Remote

Sometimes your garage door opener remote just goes bad. This is particularly true with cheaper systems. In most cases, it will just stop working. In others, it may start sending out the radio signal to open the door. Pull out the batteries. If the door stops acting odd, thy remote is the problem. Get a replacement or a remote.

The good news is a garage door opening by itself is not a serious problem. The remote is usually the problem, so try working with it as described above. In a worst case scenario, you’ll just need a new one.
