My Garage Door Opener Automatically Reverses
A common question I get is my garage door opener automatically reverses for no reason. Why? My hokey answer is because the door doesn’t want you to leave! There is, of course, a better answer.
A garage door opener is a stupid mechanical system. You’ve heard of sophisticated devices like engine computer control units? This is the opposite. A garage door opener system works on a few basic commands. It does its job well day after day, week after weak, year after year. Interfere with those basic commands at all, however, and all heck can break loose. This is what is happening when your garage door automatically reverses for no apparent reason.

The Eyes Have It
Are you aware your garage door opener has eyes? They are located in the oddest spot. Well, odd until you know their purpose. There are two eyes. Each can be found on the bottom of the garage door frame on each side of the door. The interior of the garage, not the exterior!
So, what do these eyes do? They are lovers. They stare at each other non-stop. When something blocks their vision, they send a signal to the motor unit. The unit will then refuse to close the door. Since it is not the smartest computer in the building, it can take a few seconds for the order to process. As a result, you door moves some of the way and then reverses.

The solution to this problem is to clean the eyes. The area around the bottom of the garage door is dirty and dusty. Lightly clean the lens of each sensor. Then look along the bottom of the garage door. Are there leaves or any other debris that might be sticking out and blocking the view? If so, remove it.
Now fire up the garage door and see if it works. This is nearly always the problem when your garage door opener automatically reverses.
