A garage door opener is a wonderful thing until it doesn’t work. One common problem is you must get close to the receiver for the garage door opener to work.

Common problems tend to have common solutions. The garage door opener is a fairly simply device and it only does a few things. As a result, the problems are pretty well understood as are solutions. This is true whether you garage door only opens half way, doesn’t open at all or just flies away. [Just kidding.]

So, what is the problem if you must get close to the receiver for the garage door opener to work? The most common problem is also a very simple one – the batteries in your opener are running low. Yes, I know the opener is supposed to flash a little red light when this happens. We are all supposed to drive 55 on the freeway and you know how that works out. Try switching out the batteries and see if that does the trick. Look at the battery connections to make sure there isn’t grit and gunk on them that might block the flow of energy.

You’ve got new batteries and the problem still exists. Now what? Common problems have common solutions. The opener works by shooting a radio wave to the receiver. It is exceedingly simply, but it can run into problems in a couple of ways. Think of your opener as a mouth uttering words. Think of the receiver as an ear. If there is anything blocking the sound from getting to the ear, then problems can arise.

Now we get funky. Stand in your garage. Do not press the opener. Look at the red light. Is it flashing? If it is, there may be an invasion force in your life. Yes, I am talking about a neighbor that has a garage door opener or other device that is interfering with your signal. When you see the red light flashing, it means either you have a low battery or there are excessive radio waves in the area. This creates “noise” and your opener can’t “hear” your opener. This is a very common problem in condominium and townhome areas. There is no simple solution but to walk around and talk to the neighbors. Usually you can find a solution by identifying the one that is having similar problems with their doors.

There can be a number of reasons if you must get close to the receiver for the garage door opener to work. Batteries are simple and the most common problem. Start there and then work your way through this list.
